The Short Rule: Play Enhanced, Unless Your Crew or Hardware Says Otherwise
Enhanced is the current version of GTA Online. It looks better, loads faster, carries extra features like Hao's Special Works and the Career Builder, unlocks GTA+ membership, and on PC it arrived as a free upgrade. If you can run it, it is the version to play in 2026.
There are two honest exceptions. If your hardware cannot meet Enhanced's requirements, Legacy still plays the same core game with the same major updates. And if your regular crew is still on Legacy, stay with them for now — because the two versions cannot join each other's sessions at all.
That one rule — never split a crew across versions — matters more than every graphics comparison below it.
Key Takeaways
- Enhanced is the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S version from March 2022, and the upgraded PC build from March 2025. Legacy is the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version, and the original PC build.
- Legacy and Enhanced players cannot play together, and there is no crossplay between any platforms either.
- Enhanced adds Hao's Special Works, the GTA$4,000,000 Career Builder, Career Progress tracking, Chameleon paints and GTA+ — Legacy gets none of those.
- Both versions still receive the main title updates and weekly events, including 2025's Mansions update and Title Update 1.73 in July 2026.
- Profile migration to Enhanced is one-time and one-way: afterwards, your Legacy and Enhanced profiles stop syncing.
1. Which Version Is Which
"Enhanced" began on consoles, where the Expanded and Enhanced release launched for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 15 March 2022. It also sold GTA Online as a standalone game on those consoles for the first time.
PC followed on 4 March 2025. Rockstar released the upgraded PC build as a free upgrade for existing owners through the Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam and the Epic Games Store, and new PC purchases now include both builds together.
Legacy is everything else: the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version, plus the original PC build. Rockstar kept it available on purpose, saying players whose hardware does not meet the upgrade's minimum requirements should be able to keep playing.
One trap catches console players: running the PlayStation 4 version on a PlayStation 5 through backwards compatibility still puts you in the PlayStation 4 world's lobbies. The console is new; the version is Legacy.
2. Graphics and Performance: The Visible Gap
Enhanced on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X offers three modes. Fidelity targets 30 frames per second at native 4K with ray tracing. Performance targets 60 frames per second at upscaled 4K. Performance RT keeps ray tracing at a 60-frame target with upscaled 4K, and is not offered on Xbox Series S.
Series S runs upscaled 4K in Fidelity and 1080p in Performance. Testing by Digital Foundry found the console 60-frame modes render at around 1440p internally before upscaling, which is why they look softer than the Fidelity mode but feel far smoother.
PlayStation 4 and Xbox One have no modes at all: 1080p, capped at 30 frames per second, no ray tracing. The gap in loading is just as obvious, since Enhanced is built around SSD storage on console and DirectStorage on PC.
PC Enhanced goes further than the consoles, adding ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination on top of ray-traced shadows and reflections, plus AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS upscaling. Legacy PC has none of the ray tracing or upscaling options.
3. Features Only Enhanced Has
Hao's Special Works is the headline: a tuning shop inside the LS Car Meet with its own races, time trials and premium test rides. It launched with twenty upgradeable vehicles on console, and the PC upgrade added five more, including the Pegassi Weaponized Ignus and the Coil Cyclone II.
Those upgrades rewrite the speed rankings entirely — our fastest cars in GTA Online guide is built on HSW numbers, and several HSW picks also anchor our best cars in GTA Online list. On Legacy, none of those cars can be upgraded at all.
New and returning players on Enhanced also get the Career Builder, which starts a character with GTA$4,000,000 of setup value across four career paths: Executive, Gunrunner, Nightclub Owner or Biker. The Career Progress tracker, which organises hundreds of challenges into a proper progression path, is Enhanced-only too.
Enhanced is also the only route to GTA+ membership, the Chameleon paint range, ambient animals with the daily Wildlife Photography Challenge, and the Vinewood Club. On PC, the Enhanced build adds kernel-based anti-cheat and voice-chat moderation that Legacy does not have.
4. What Legacy Still Gets — More Than You Would Think
Here is the part that surprises people: Legacy is not frozen. Both versions receive the game's title updates, and the update notes for Title Update 1.73 in July 2026 cover PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC Legacy alongside the current platforms.
The December 2025 Safehouse in the Hills update is the strongest example. Its mansions — the subject of our GTA Online mansions guide — are purchasable on the older platforms too, not held back for current hardware.
Weekly events, bonuses and discounts run on both versions as well. A Legacy player in 2026 is playing the same live game on the same weekly rhythm as everyone else.
The honest limit is features, not content. Rockstar has been clear since 2022 that the newer feature upgrades belong to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced. Legacy keeps getting the game; Enhanced keeps getting the game's future extras.
5. No Shared Lobbies: Version, Platform and Your Friends
Rockstar states it plainly in its own PC upgrade notes: Legacy and Enhanced players are separate and cannot play together. There is no setting, session type or invite trick that bridges the two builds.
The same wall runs between platforms. PlayStation, Xbox and PC players have never been able to share a GTA Online session, and the version split adds a second wall inside each platform family.
So the practical question is not which version is best — it is which version your people are on. A crew that migrates one member at a time will spend weeks unable to play together. Decide as a group, migrate as a group.
6. Migration: One-Way, One-Time, and Worth Timing
Moving your profile is built into the games. Console players were offered a one-time migration when the current-generation versions launched in 2022, and PC players migrate from an alert screen in the Enhanced build, with story progress handled from the pause menu.
Rockstar's warning about PC migration deserves reading twice: once a profile is migrated, the Legacy copy stays where it was and the two no longer sync. Progress you make afterwards exists only on the side where you earned it.
That makes migration a decision, not a reflex. Migrate when you are ready to leave Legacy behind for good, because there is no merge and no way back. There is also still no route to move a profile between PC and console in either direction.
7. Price and Getting Enhanced
On PC there is nothing to decide about price: the upgrade was free for existing owners, and anyone buying GTA V on PC now receives both builds. Store prices for the game itself move constantly with sales, so check your launcher's current listing rather than trusting any quoted figure.
On console, Enhanced is simply the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S release, with GTA Online also sold on its own. Upgrade pricing for owners of the older console versions has changed several times since 2022, so the store page on your own console is the only reliable answer on the day you check.
If you are still on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One and weighing a hardware jump anyway, the bigger question is answered in our explainer on whether GTA 6 is coming to PS4 or Xbox One — the next game is not, which changes the maths for a lot of players.
8. The Verdict by Player Type
New player: Enhanced, no debate. The Career Builder's GTA$4,000,000 start alone is worth more than anything Legacy offers, and every future feature lands here first.
Returning player with an old profile: migrate, but time it. Finish anything you want to do with Legacy friends first, because the profiles split permanently the moment you move.
PC player on older hardware: check the Enhanced minimums before assuming you are stuck. They are modest — an Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD FX-9590, 8 GB of RAM, a GTX 1630 or RX 6400, and 105 GB of SSD space. The recommended build (Core i5-9600K or Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB, RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT) is ordinary mid-range hardware now.
Crew split across versions: the right version is the one your crew plays. Agree on a migration day, or stay put together — a better-looking game is a poor trade for having nobody to play it with.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GTA Online Enhanced free on PC?
Yes. The upgraded PC build launched on 4 March 2025 as a free upgrade for existing GTA V owners on the Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam and Epic Games Store. New PC purchases include both the Enhanced and Legacy builds together.
Can Legacy and Enhanced players play together?
No. Rockstar states directly that Legacy and Enhanced players are separate and cannot play together. The split applies on PC between the two builds, and on console between the PlayStation 4/Xbox One version and the PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X|S version.
Can PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players share a GTA Online session?
Only if the PlayStation 5 player runs the PlayStation 4 version through backwards compatibility, which places them in the older version's lobbies. The native PlayStation 5 version plays only with other PlayStation 5 version players.
What does Enhanced add over Legacy?
Hao's Special Works tuning and races, the Career Builder with its GTA$4,000,000 start, Career Progress tracking, GTA+ membership, Chameleon paints, ambient animals and the Wildlife Photography Challenge — plus ray-traced graphics modes and much faster loading.
Does Legacy still receive updates?
Yes. Title Update 1.73 in July 2026 covered PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC Legacy, and the December 2025 Mansions update is available on the older platforms too. What Legacy does not receive is the newer feature upgrades such as Hao's Special Works.
Can I move my GTA Online character from Legacy to Enhanced?
Yes, through the built-in one-time profile migration. Rockstar warns that after migration the Legacy profile remains as it was and no longer syncs with Enhanced, so progress afterwards exists only on the version where you earned it.
Can I switch back to Legacy after migrating?
Your Legacy profile still exists and can still be played, but it is frozen at the point of migration and never re-syncs. In practice, migrating means your progress continues on Enhanced only.
Is there crossplay in GTA Online on any version?
No. GTA Online has no crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox and PC, and the Legacy/Enhanced split separates players further within each platform family. Everyone in a session is on the same platform and the same version.
Which version should a low-end PC run?
Legacy, if your machine falls below Enhanced's minimum specification — Rockstar kept Legacy available for exactly that case. The Enhanced minimums are modest (GTX 1630 or RX 6400 class graphics, 8 GB of RAM, SSD storage), so many older PCs qualify for the upgrade.
Do I have to buy GTA V again to get Enhanced?
On PC, no — the upgrade was free for owners. On console, Enhanced is the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S release of the game, and upgrade pricing for previous-generation owners has varied over time, so check the store listing on your console for the current offer.
The Bottom Line
Enhanced is the better game by every measure — graphics, features, loading and future support — and on PC it costs existing owners nothing. Legacy remains a perfectly playable version of the same live game. Just never split a crew across the wall between them, because no session will ever bring the two sides together.
