GTA Online Crews, Explained

A Crew Is a Social Club Group, Not a Business

A crew is GTA Online's built-in group system: a named team of players who share an identity — a name, a four-character tag, a colour and an emblem — and get small bonuses for playing together. Crews live on Rockstar's Social Club platform, which is where they are created and managed.

A crew is not a money-making layer. It owns nothing, produces nothing and sells nothing. Your Organization and your Motorcycle Club are separate systems that sit alongside your crew, and plenty of players run all three at once.

Player-made crews hold up to 1,000 members, and you can belong to five crews at the same time — although only one of them, your active crew, is the one you actually represent in-game. Here is how the whole system works.

Key Takeaways

  • A crew is a Social Club group with a shared name, tag, colour, emblem and motto. It is separate from CEO Organizations and Motorcycle Clubs.
  • Player-made crews cap at 1,000 members. You can join up to five crews, but only one is active at a time.
  • Crews run on a five-tier hierarchy: Leader, Commissioners, Lieutenants, Representatives and Muscle.
  • Playing jobs with crew members pays bonus RP — the game's own tutorial teaches a 10 percent bonus for finishing a job with a crew member.
  • Your crew colour becomes a vehicle paint option, and your crew emblem can be worn on vehicles, some clothing and tattoos.

1. What You Set When You Create One

Creating a crew happens on the Social Club website, not inside the game. The leader chooses the name, the four-character tag, the crew colour and whether the crew is open to anyone or invite-only.

The leader also writes the motto, picks a crew style — the flavours offered are Chatter Boxes, Thrill Seekers, Rebels, Soldiers and All Stars — and designs or uploads the crew emblem in Social Club's emblem editor. That emblem is the crew's badge everywhere it appears in-game.

Some day-to-day crew business can be handled from the pause menu in-game, including which of your crews is active. The deeper management — the hierarchy, the emblem, the settings — stays on the Social Club site.

2. The Hierarchy: Five Ranks of Authority

Every crew is organised into five tiers. At the top sits the Leader, who owns the crew and controls everything about it.

Commissioners are the leader's deputies and can manage almost everything on the leader's behalf, including promoting members and sending invites. Lieutenants can promote and demote the ranks below them and invite new members, while Representatives mainly recruit and invite. Muscle is the rank and file: full members with no management powers.

Separately from authority, every member carries a crew rank earned by playing, and its titles are set by the leader. The defaults climb in bands of ten ranks, from Thug at ranks 1 to 10 up to Kingpin at rank 91 and above, and most established crews rename them to something of their own.

The split between the two ladders matters. The hierarchy decides who can run the crew; the rank titles only describe how much a member has played under the crew's banner. A brand-new member can be made a Commissioner on day one, and a Kingpin-ranked veteran can still be plain Muscle in the hierarchy if the leader leaves them there.

3. Joining a Crew, and the Five-Crew Rule

Joining is simpler than founding. Crews can be found through the Social Club site or through the Crews menu in-game: open crews accept members directly, while invite-only crews need an invitation or an approved request.

You can hold membership in up to five crews at once, which suits players whose friends are scattered across different groups. Invitations work both ways: a crew can invite you, and pending invitations can be reviewed and accepted from the Crews area of the in-game Online menu as well as on the Social Club site.

Only one crew is active at any time, though — your active crew is the one whose tag and colour represent you, whose members count as your crew in-game, and whose emblem you can apply.

Switching your active crew is a menu choice, not a commitment ceremony. Players commonly keep a main crew active and treat the other four slots as affiliations.

4. What a Crew Actually Does for You In-Game

The headline benefit is RP. The game's own tutorial states the numbers plainly: finishing a job as part of a team pays 20 percent more RP, and finishing one with a crew member adds a further 10 percent. For a new character, that bonus is one of the quiet engines behind the early methods in our guide to ranking up fast.

Identity is the second benefit. Your crew colour becomes available as a vehicle colour, and your crew emblem can be applied to vehicles, worn on some clothing and even used in tattoos — which is why so many Freemode lobbies read like a patchwork of team liveries.

The third benefit is company. Crews get their own sessions, their own Social Club leaderboards, and a standing pool of people to fill a heist lobby. A good crew is less a feature than a contact list that never empties.

5. Crews Are Not Organizations, Clubs or Servers

Because GTA Online stacks several group systems, the confusion is understandable. A crew is your Social Club identity. An Organization or Motorcycle Club is an in-game business layer you register for in Freemode, with its own properties and work — a completely separate system covered in our guide to registering as an MC President or CEO.

A crew is also not a roleplay server: those are community-run worlds, mostly on PC, with their own rules and applications, as our roleplay servers explainer sets out. And a crew session is a shared lobby for your members — the opposite end of the scale from the empty lobbies in our solo public session guide.

As for the future: players naturally ask whether their crew carries into the next game. Rockstar has announced nothing about crews for GTA 6 Online, which remains unannounced; our GTA 6 Online crews explainer covers what is and is not known, clearly labelled as the future game.

6. Picking a Crew Worth Staying In

If you are joining rather than founding, judge a crew by activity, not size. A 1,000-member crew with nobody online is worth less than a 30-member crew that runs heists every night, and the member cap means the biggest crews are often the quietest.

Match the crew to your platform and your hours. A crew built around another time zone will never fill your lobbies, however good its emblem looks. Open crews are the fastest way in; an invite-only crew that asks a question or two first is usually screening for exactly the reliability you want in a heist partner.

And if none of them fit, founding your own costs nothing but an evening in the emblem editor. Plenty of long-running crews began as two friends and a joke name.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a crew in GTA Online?

A crew is a player group run through Rockstar's Social Club, with a shared name, four-character tag, colour, emblem and motto. Members earn bonus RP for playing jobs together and can wear the crew's identity on vehicles and clothing.

How many crews can you join in GTA Online?

You can be a member of up to five crews at the same time. Only one of them is your active crew — the one you represent in-game.

How many members can a crew have?

Player-made crews hold up to 1,000 members, a cap raised from 300 in February 2014. Crews created by Rockstar itself have no member cap.

How do you create a crew?

On the Rockstar Social Club website. Creating a crew is done there — name, tag, colour, motto, style and emblem — rather than inside the game, although some crew options can be managed from the in-game pause menu.

What are the crew ranks?

Five tiers: Leader, then Commissioners, Lieutenants, Representatives and Muscle. Members also earn crew rank titles as they play, which run from Thug to Kingpin by default and can be renamed by the leader.

Do crews give bonus RP?

Yes. Jobs pay 20 percent more RP when completed as part of a team, and finishing a job with a crew member adds a further 10 percent — figures the game's own tutorial teaches new players.

Is a crew the same as an MC or an Organization?

No. Crews are Social Club groups. Organizations and Motorcycle Clubs are separate in-game business layers that you register for in Freemode, with their own properties, work and abilities.

Can you put your crew emblem on a car?

Yes. Your crew emblem can be applied to vehicles and worn on some clothing and tattoos, and your crew colour becomes available as a vehicle paint option.

What does active crew mean?

Your active crew is the one you currently represent: its tag shows as yours, its members count as your crew for bonuses, and its emblem and colour are the ones you can use. You can switch which of your five crews is active.

Do you have to pay to join or create a crew?

No. Crews are a free Social Club feature. Creating or joining one only takes a Social Club account and a copy of the game.

What It All Means

A crew costs nothing, owns nothing and sells nothing — and it is still one of the best decisions a new player can make. The bonus RP, the shared identity and the ready-made lobby of teammates outlast any single business you will ever buy in Los Santos.
